Jayden’s phone started ringing. He looked at the number flashing on the screen, but didn’t recognize it. Picking up his phone he contemplated answering. Should he let it go to voice mail? Did he want to deal with a salesperson? Answer, ignore, answer, ignore. His curiosity getting the better of him, Jayden clicked the answer button.

“Hello,” he said tentatively.

“Is this Jayden?” the voice asked, and Jayden’s heart kicked into over drive. He knew the voice, knew who it belonged to.

“Yes, hi, this is Jayden.” Duh, you just said that twice, idiot. His brain had somehow turned to mush in a matter of seconds, and all because the voice belonged to Andrew Porter.

“This is Andrew Porter. Do you know who I am?”

Of course, I know exactly who you are, you’re my mate. “Uh, yeah, hi, how are you doing?”

Why were the words in his brain sounding better than the ones coming out of his mouth? He held the phone tighter, hoping that Andrew wouldn’t think he was a silly kid. He had zero experience with men and relationships. Hell, his only experiences consisted of dancing and kissing. He didn’t have a smooth bone in his body compared to Andrew. The older man probably had been with hundreds of guys. That thought made him sick to his stomach and he wanted to hang up. If there was a way to turn back time, he’d ignore the phone all together.

“I’m much better, thanks to you.” Andrew’s voice was pure sex, affecting not only Jayden’s body but his mind.

Did vampires have mind-controlling abilities? He’d never heard of that particular power, but anything was possible.

“Good, that’s…uh…good to hear.” The silence that followed made him feel uncomfortable.

Jayden clamped his mouth closed to prevent himself from filling the silence. He was known for blabbering about pure nonsense when nervous. And right now, his heart was in his throat and his palms were sweating. He could feel his plastic case slowly slipping through his fingers. God, this is so freakin’ awkward. He’d never heard of this happening between mates. Shouldn’t things just flow and be simple?

Jayden finally cracked under the silence. “I’m sorry that I didn’t come over to your house. I just thought that it was too soon, you know?”

“It’s not your fault, Jayden. I should probably apologize for my actions in the dungeon.” He exhaled loudly before continuing once more. “I didn’t recognize you as my True Match, and for that I’m truly sorry. I hope that I didn’t hurt your feelings.”

Jayden’s brows furrowed. Seriously? The huge scary vampire didn’t want to hurt his feelings? Those words sounded so odd, as if the man shouldn’t have said them at all. Maybe he was wrong about Andrew. The man might look big and bad, but he sure wasn’t acting like it at the moment.

“Oh, no, I’m fine,” he reassured Andrew.

Why was he acting as if the man’s face inside the dungeon half shifted into that of a monster was no big deal?

“I’ve been doing some research,” he blurted out, and his eyes widened.
